Preparation for the 2003 salute. Hout Bay Artilleryman, Capt Asogan Naidoo of the Hout Bay Police, instructs the Head of the Indian High commission to Cape Town, Sandeep Kumar, how to fire one of Hout Bay's c.1752 cannons in salute to India on her National Day. (Right) Gunners Pierre Malan, Inspector Ferdie Greeff (SAPS Hout Bay) and Master Gunner Allan Dellbridge. |
2002's event, Sandeep Kumar shows how it's done - a one Kg charge of gunpowder is more than enough to get the attention of Hout Bay's laid back residents! Though many people are unaware, the guns made in India's Goa province in the early 1600's were the finest in the world and sought after by all the worlds potentates. They were made by the Boccarro family who eventually also made guns in Macao in China. |
