Prince of Wales Block House |
|
The Prince of Wales Block House was named after the first son of George III who succeeded as George IV. Little remains of the Prince of Wales Block House other than the terre plein and the barbette wall. The gun platform is overgrown (as is the case at Queens Block House) and needs to be cleared. |
The 24 pounder gun is in remarkable condition but no trace of a carriage remains. It is very likely that the barrel will be cleared with ease but the vent may have been spiked which makes the task of drilling out the spike a difficult problem. Where this has been necessary elsewhere it has been found to be easier to drill out a second vent hole. The barrels weigh about 3 tons and will need special lifting gear. |

The markings on the gun are very clear and there appears to be very little corrosion of the cast iron itself. This contrasts completely with guns found nearer sea level where the salt air has had a very corrosive effect over time. |
